Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy XIII Basics Like the rest of the recent Final Fantasy iterations, 13 is set in a fantastical, quasi-dystopian land that can simultaneously remind you of almost every sci-fi sub-genre while still retaining that signature Final Fantasy style. Your main character is lightning, but you'll also experience the story from many of her compatriot's perspectives as you work through the magnanimous but strictly linear plot.

Review of Final Fantasy XIII

Literally everything you'll see in Cocoon is beautifully rendered; the large scale environments are breathtaking, but there's an equal amount of detail in the individual textures. Every character model is imaginatively crafted and is animated with incredible realism.

Powered by the Crystal tools engine, FFXIII is capable of instant, clean transitions directly between normal exploratory gameplay, battle sequences, and full motion videos without any load times.

Although als o doubtlessly impressive, the 360 version suffers a few drawbacks in this regard due to the necessity of cramming this epic onto three DVD's. The entire game displays at a lower resolution, and has a massive 18 plus GB install. This could be especially prohibitive if you own the arcade release of the 360.

The soundtrack consistently rises to the challenge as well: although the set of stock tracks that play over battles will inevitably get old after a while, the original score is always appropriately epic. Pretty much every facet of this game's production values are top-notch.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the writing, which can and will not hesitate to produce groan after groan in p layers. At their worst, almost every personality with the exception of lightning can feel like a hastily slapped together stock character. Although you'll sense a lot of care taken in creating the mythos of this Final Fantasy world, the individual characters that inhabit it feel empty and flat.
